“Are you sure you want to splurge on shipping? It’s not going to hurt the kids to wait a few more days for their shoes.” Stanley hovers the mouse over the overnight shipping button.

“Yes. These kids and Reina deserve nice shoes. Plus, it would be fun to surprise them after their games on Monday. If they get here tomorrow I can have it all ready by the time they have their kickoff.”

“Alrighty, if you say so.” His eye twitches as he clicks overnight shipping, adding on an additional hundred dollars to our already very expensive order of soccer cleats. Me, I couldn’t care less. I know I have more money where this came from and I’m determined to spend all of the thousands of dollars I had stashed in my wallet on this town before I leave. These people deserve it and are worth the expense.

Especially Reina.

“Thanks for helping me with this, Stanley.”

“You’re welcome, my boy. Now we just have to find a way to hide the boxes when they get delivered here tomorrow.”

“I have an idea. I’m going to ask Mateo to distract Reina after church. Then I can hide the boxes in the barn—I’m thinking one of the empty stalls. I’ll make sure she knows I’m going to muck the stalls for her from now on, that way she doesn’t go into the stall.”

There’s a twinkle in Stanley’s eye. “I’ve got a tarp we can throw over the pile too so she can’t see any logos or anything. She’ll love the fact she won’t be mucking stalls for a few days.”

“That’s what I thought too.”

I don’t know if I’m going about this whole "showing I’m changing instead of telling thing" right. I feel peace about the decision to take on more chores around the farm. From the smile that hasn’t left Stanley’s face all afternoon as we weeded the gardens, I think I’m on the right track.

I’ll have to wait and see if Reina notices.
